Tova Darling, and the donation quandry

If you're not reading Tova Darling, first of all you should be. Yesterday she brought up a controversial topic about how we choose to spend and/or donate our money. Please go read it, I'll wait.

A lady started a blog with the sole purpose of asking people to help pay for her dream wedding by donating money to her via PayPal. And people are freaking out about it! Tova Darling brilliantly explained both sides of the issue. I can't do her post justice, you really have to go read it.

And then you have to go to the actual blog. It's called Help Me Pay For My Wedding! Some chick named Nancy apparently sent Broke Bride to Be an email that she thought was funny enough to post on her website. Wonder what the trolls will make of that!

I just read a story about a girl who wants to go to Notre Dame, and so she started a site where she asked people to help her pay for it. I really don't see what's to get worked up over.

Fancy Schmancy, you are hilarious -- and sweet, besides.

I think I will start a web site, "Help A Hungry Lawyer Pay Her Ridiculous Bills That She Incurred By Spending Frivolously When Times Were Good And Now Can't Pay Because Times Are Bad."

Do you think I will get donations?

Is the title too long?

Will you help me promote it?

mjenks, I don't get it, either.

Legalmist, I'd be happy to help in any way that I can, except a monetary donation!

Well...I think you were very generous to donate to her cause and what you said was extremely gracious.

Personally, I think people focus far too much on the WEDDING and not enough on the MARRIAGE. She has balls to ask, (and I mean that in both good and bad ways) and if people find that charming or brave or whatever, and want to donate to her, who am I to judge? Would I donate to her? Nope.

Kate, I haven't donated, Yet. But I fully intend to. I love weddings! Big, small, gay, straight, simple, elegant, circus themed, I don't care. And I don't even believe in marriage, for me.

If I recall correctly, I first heard of you and went to your website because of your awesome wedding pictures!

If people are WILLING and ABLE to donate money to a cause, who are we to say that they can't? Or 'shouldn't'? I mean, that's just ridiculous!!

Maybe I need to start a paypal donation button on my site ;) Lol. PS. LOVE LegalMist's idea :)

Hey, I see no problem with the girl asking. Why not? We all started blogs for various reasons, right? So she started one to score a lavish wedding. Okay. The worst that could possibly happen is that no-one would give her a dime, right? And then she would end up right where she started. No big deal. Anyone who is offended by this is bizarre. If it doesn't appeal to you, just walk away, folks. I don't see why anyone needs to rant and rave and get all wired up about it.

Maybe it's the Midwestern in me, but I can barely tolerate the fact that I have blog ads on my blog, so to have a donate gimmie-gimmie button is a bit weird to me (hello, run on sentence!).

I give her mad props for her honesty, but I'd never give her a penny. But it's her deal, you know? I'm not upset, just a little taken aback. Sick kid, I'd consider pulling out my wallet, but not a wedding.

(I think weddings are dumb, so I'm probably the last person to get mushy about it).

I'd be willing to bet somewhere that this could easily be a sociological experiment. Some sociologist is seeing what people will do for others :)

Hmm. Maybe I should start a site to get people to help pay for the Wurlitzer jukebox I've always wanted to own.
